SPEC Receives Recognition in Air Force SBIR Impact story... 21 November 2001 MEMORANDUM FOR: Systems Processes Engineering Corp 101 W. Sixth St., Suite 200 Austin TX 78701 FROM: AFRL/SNOX BLDG 620 2241 AVIONICS CIRCLE Wright-Patterson AFB, OH 45433-7320 SUBJECT: Sensors Directorate Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Achievements The Sensors Directorate develops advanced sensors for both air and space reconnaissance, surveillance, precision engagement, and electronic warfare applications. Key focus areas involve radar, active and passive electro-optical systems, electronic support measures and countermeasures, navigation aids, and automatic target recognition. In order to maintain its edge, the AFRL Sensors Directorate relies heavily on the innovative talents of small technology firms. The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is one way to involve small business in early stage research and development. This program provides timely and vital seed capital to enable small companies to develop dual-use technologies and products not only for the AF war fighters but also for the commercial marketplace. As a result, the Air Force, the small business community and the national economy all benefit. Successful SBIR projects move through three phases. Phase I proves the feasibility of the concept. Phase II further develops the concept. Phase III, the commercialization phase, is the goal of every SBIR effort. It is in this phase that the product or service is marketed to the Government, the private sector-or hopefully both. Because you have successfully progressed to the Phase III level, the attached Sensors Directorate SBIR Achievement sheet highlights your firm. It describes some of the benefits that the Air Force, you, as a member of the small business community, and our nation have received through your participation in this valuable program. We recommend that you forward copies of your SBIR Achievement Sheet to your local congressmen as a mean to reinforce the impact of this dynamic program to your individual state.
